A Reboot?!
It's been some time since I last grazed the plains of the old Film Assist blog. When I wrote my goodbye post I meant it. I didn't think I'd be coming back. Film criticism wasn't fun anymore and I needed to clear my head for a bit. But as time passed, I found that familiar itch crawling up my fingers. Ideas started flowing through me as I innocently watched movies. In the middle of the night, I'd still be awake, staring at my ceiling, having the need to climb a mountain and scream my thoughts from its top. The urge was powerful. I guess this is what people mean when they say you can never let go of what you love. So, with that said, I'll be returning to the Film Assist blog!
It's been about three years since I left, so I guess an obvious question would be what the heck have I been doing in all that time? Why, writing you silly goose. I teamed up with some friends to create a website for them where I got to continue my film writings. They hosted the Random Movie Roulette podcast for a few years and wanted to experiment with the written word. I joined to write weekly articles, some of which I'm very proud of (Like my examination of the social anxiety of one Tony Stark). Alas, that too came to an end and the cycle repeated for me.
Coming back to the Film Assist blog will be different. After working with my friends I briefly entertained the idea of a Substack. I've found some great film writers on there whom I love to read and who inspired me to write my own, but as I released posts I couldn't help but feel that what I was doing on substack was basically what I was doing here on the Film Assist blog mere years earlier, and inevitably I let my endeavors on that go. So, the first couple of months that I'll be back will be me reintroducing articles that I've written elsewhere. I want Film Assist to be the one-stop place for my writing so please bear with me as I upload previously placed pieces.
After everything is on this site I'll be writing essay-like content whenever I feel the need. One of the deciding factors on ending the Film Assist blog all those years ago was burnout. I did not have fun writing articles that would take me hours and days to put together only to start that again immediately the day after it was released. Whenever I see other film sites pounding out post after post I can't help but feel respect towards them, but I personally cannot keep up with writing three two-thousand-word articles a day, or week, when I'm also trying to live my life. The Film Assist blog should be fun first and foremost. There will be a point where I'm not releasing weekly posts, and that's okay. I want what I release to matter and I need the time to make sure it's good for all of you.
Other than the site redesign, which I'm sure you've noticed by now (does it look good?), I'll also be starting an Instagram account. The account won't be promoting the blog. In fact, it'll be entirely separate, but I wanted to use the blog as a way to give it a home. The Instagram account that I want to make (which will go live sometime in July) will be called Theaters Theatres Everywhere. It'll be about the different movie theaters I visit where I can gush about them and share pictures! I've been making a list of movie theaters around me and I think it'll be a very fun hobby.
