A Hopeful Return

A Reintroduction to Writing Film

Hello all,

If you’re still with me 👀

It’s been awhile since my last post, and even longer since I talked about films. I thought I’d reintroduce myself to some of you as I make a return on the written webs.

Who I Am

My name is Cody. I’ve been writing blogs for over 10 years now, a film connoisseur, and a simple lonely nugget. This year has been tough mentally and creatively, but I’m working through it and wish to start again.

What I’m Watching

Well, I can happily say I saw Superman today! Went to my favorite IMAX house and nearly cried. The amount of hope instilled in James Gunn’s Superman is awe inspiring. I won’t go into detail about it because it’s new, and I’ve only seen it once, but you should check out.

On a whim, I bought Tokyo Uber Blues. This documentary chronicles a Japanese man during lockdowns of Covid-19 where he travels to Tokyo to be an Uber eats delivery guy. Part of my enjoyment was seeing another country handle the pandemic in a much calmer climate. However, the main subject (Taku) will have you cringing, cheering, and pitying as he challenges his determination through this difficult time. He’s very detailed in his daily breakdowns by showing us how many hours he worked and how much money he earned. Being Uber reliant is a booming industry, but to make profit one must also put their body through tight strains, so when Taku does reach triple digit earnings in a day, we celebrate, but when he celebrates too and uses too much money we’re on the floor with him the next day walling in misery.

What I’m Reading

This page is mainly for film talk, but another passion of mine that I’ve been neglecting has been reading. I love to read as much, if not more, than my love for film. I’ve recently gotten out of a month long reading slump by checking out the works of Uketsu. Who is Uketsu? Apparently, they’re a famous anonymous Japanese YouTuber that started writing books. Wild.

Anyway, his two books were able to get me out of my slump. They’re easy, breezy, confident boosting stories that are very similar. Strange Houses is about a guy looking at blueprints to a house a friend is looking to buy, intending on giving feedback on whether they should buy it or not, but upon looking at the blueprints and finding some odd architecture, he reaches out to an expert of which they quickly conclude it’s a murder house. As the story unfolds you learn about some dark, twisted, family secrets that will have you up at night.

I’m currently reading Uketsu’s other book, Strange Pictures. This one has a similar premise. Instead of unsettling architecture, this story is about a series of pictures uploaded to a blog that seem to have told the future of a character. What I enjoy about these stories are the characters Uketsu writes are armchair detectives. They hardly qualify as an authority figure, but through limited information on an unsettling idea they slowly unravel sinister history that’s still plaguing the present.

While I read it last year, and not recently, I have had Anne of Green Gables stuck in my head. I would like to reread it. I remember enjoying it, but not falling in love with it. However, in time maybe upon this reread I will fall in love. I’m also interested in reading its sequels.

What I’m Writing

This! 😂

But seriously, I do hope to continue this if not weekly then bi-weekly. I’ve been feeling isolated this year and after finding a new therapist (I love him! He’s great!) I want to start doing things I used to enjoy. So, hopefully this will be my new consistent writing gig.

I do still need to finish my short story collection. I absolutely loathe myself that I’ve let it get this bad. Especially when I’m almost done. I have a couple edits and a draft or two to finish it all off, but I just haven’t been writing this year. Which sucks.

Along with this page, I’m going to enter a writing contest to get myself back into the habit of weekly writing. It’s a public contest where readers will influence the outcome, so once I have it all set up I’ll be promoting it here. But, I’ll basically be writing a fantasy story in chapters. I’ve been brainstorming and coming up with an outline last week, which has been immensely fun and a sense of relaxation and relief. Hopefully, with this I’ll be able to dust off my cobwebs and focus on finishing everything I start.

In Conclusion

I hope this has been a good reintroduction to me. Or, maybe this is your first introduction. Either way I’m excited to course correct my life and share it with all of you. Until next time ~
