Psych: The Movie Review!

A long time ago, USA network was in their prime of detective shows and one of their underrated gems that lasted only 8 seasons, and one musical, was Psych. It's one of the stranger shows you'll probably see, but the characters are charming, the wit is insane, and you could tell that every episode was made with love. Three years ago the show ended, but like many other shows coming up with their "revival," Psych is back on TV with their own movie!

While the story does take place after the series, and their character arcs and deep history of the show is still rooted in the movie, you don't have to watch the show to understand, or even enjoy the movie. It's written in the way that new fans will get a taste of Psych while watching an insanely enjoyable two hours of television, but for the fans it's riddled with call backs and little nods that will make you squeal with joy.

Taking place in real time, the story picks up three years after the end of Psych. Shawn, a witty detective masquerading as a psychic detective, is on the hunt for his lost wedding ring. Meanwhile, his fiance/girlfriend Juliet has to deal with her new partner on the force being shot and in the hospital. Shawn takes a break from his ring hunt to track down the perpetrator who's obsessed with ruining Juliet's life, whom is played perfectly by Zachary Levi.

The jokes come fast and hard. Rarely, if at all, does it feel like the jokes take away from the plot or flow of the story. If anything the jokes enhance the scene. Fans will definitely notice more, and get more out of the jokes (particularly one scene that involves classic Gus turning around). You can tell that they threw everything into this movie to make it the best television experience to have at the end of 2017.

The actors and actresses have all come back and are better than ever. It feels so good to watch these characters on screen again, and the new characters they introduce are memorable, hilarious, and have enough presence as the main characters that you'll love watching them (looking at you Zachary Levi and Gentleman Ninja!). Some characters even get progression in their character arcs like Gus gaining momentum in his love life.

Overall, Psych The Movie is a brand new start to, hopefully, the new direction of this property. It's electric, hilarious, and most of all enjoyable. I think it's a nice introduction to Psych, while also making it intensely meaningful to all the fans. This was a Christmas treat for all this year, and I found it to be highly satisfying on all accounts.
