The Flash S5 E6 Recap

The Flash has been killing it this season, and with last episode and this one staying the course of a good balance between family and characters with the big bad in the background...I think it's safe to say that this season will turn out just fine. And to add to the pile of praise this episode brought out something very surprising, an interest in Caitlin's story with her dad.

Right off the bat the episode splits the whole cast to cover different parts of the story. Ralph and Cecile are the detective duo looking for Cicada, Nora and Iris and Sherloque are out hunting for the crashed satellite core from last season, and finally we have Cisco and Barry and Caitlin off on an adventure to the antarctic to finally find her dad...and we found him! I was not expecting to find her dad so early on into the episode, and yet we did and the not so surprising reveal that happens later on isn't affected by this structure at all.

Nora, continuing her character path of wanting to get to know her mother from last episode, teams up with Iris to get some quality bonding time. It starts off rocky, but quickly comes together once they put their minds to it. Sherloque is alright, but between Ralph and Iris, and all the other genius side characters, it's still hard for me to believe that we need this character in the show.

Ralph and Cecile are the comedy relief team, but also provide a nice change of pace with both of them striving to be the best. Cecile is trying to bounce back after Joe is with their daughter, and so she eagerly invites herself into Ralph's investigation. She has some cute funny scenes when it's time to interrogate characters, but more importantly she has a great chemistry teaming up with Ralph in the field. Both characters support one another and it's quite uplifting to see Ralph push Cecile to her potential, and Cecile making fun of Ralph's nose twitch.

Finally, we have the main story and that's finding Caitlin's father. What started out as a hard eye rolling story, from a few episodes ago, turned into an average written episode with great standout character moments. Cisco looking out for Caitlin and digging up the dirt on her "dad," and Barry trying to look on the positive side. Although at this point in the series you'd think Caitlin would have had more trust with Cisco after all they've been through. That aside, I thought the writing made Caitlin and her father's power origins quite interesting and also leaves enough room for future episodes to really dig into their wayward relationship.

Not only that but we're greeted with a subplot of Cicada again. He's out hunting meta-humans affected by the satellite. He's getting stronger. That's about all we get other than his contact at the hospital. It really feels like they're setting him up to be unleashed in the next episode or so, so I'm quite intrigued as to where they take him when team flash finally catches up to him.

Overall this was another delightful episode in a season that is fully making up for their shortcomings in seasons past. Cecile continues to be a delight, Ralph's wardrobe is still on point, the mother/daughter relationship is starting to be stitched back together, and we mostly got the resolution of Caitlin's father's story line over a few episodes after it was introduced. It was yet another solid episode and I certainly hope that the rest of the season continues to be this delightful.

Key Points:

  • No more "Where's my father?" from Caitlin
  • Icicle is born...does that mean Icicle Jr is coming?
  • Cecile is stepping up
  • Nora is reaching out to her mother
  • Cicada is getting stronger
